The surprising lessons I learnt from photographing my outfits for a year
What I discovered about style, self, and simplicity
Today, I’m sharing how a simple daily habit taught me more about my style than years of shopping ever did.
The thing is, I never set out to photograph my outfits for an entire year. What began as a small experiment ~ snapping a quick photo before heading out the door ~ became an unexpectedly tender practice of noticing, refining, and reconnecting with my wardrobe.
The experience has been quietly transformative. By taking a step back, I could see ~ quite plainly, without bias ~ what was actually being worn and loved, and what pieces remaining hanging untouched. My wardrobe became tidier, lovelier to look at, and far easier to navigate. Shopping grew simpler too: I could see, with sharp clarity, what I needed and what I didn’t.
And then there’s the curious thing that happens when you look at a photograph rather than a mirror. A mirror flatters, distorts, reassures. A photo is more truthful. What I thought looked one way sometimes appeared entirely different on camera. Over time, this practice taught me to really see my clothes, rather than simply slip them on.
I’m not sure if I’ll continue taking photos every day going forward, but at the start of each season ~ or whenever I’m feeling a little muddled about style ~ I’ll return to the ritual. It’s positively grounding, and clarifying. If you try it, I promise you this: after a while, there will be only pieces in your wardrobe that you genuinely love and wear.
